ASEAN-EU Year of Science, Technology, and Innovation

Posing in front of my poster at the ASEAN-EU conference in Brussels, December 2012.

I attended a conference on the ASEAN-EU cooperation in science, technology and innovation that focuses on health and food technologies. In this conference, I also had an opportunity to present my work as a PhD student entitled "Evaluation and calibration of modern speaker recognition systems in forensic conditions and applications". I join this conference as a representative of Marie-Curie fellows from the BBfor2 ITN project who come from Indonesia, one of the ASEAN countries. At the end of this conference I also have a chance to meet the SEA-EU-NET board members. Even if it's only for one time in my life, I am so happy to be inside the EU office as a representative of my home country, Indonesia.

Presentation at IAFPA conference 2012

This is where the gala dinner taken place, the palace.

I was in Santander, Spain for IAFPA conference 2012. It was such a great time, especially meeting several people whom I have met before at last year IAFPA conference. I had to present my paper with tittle "A study of likelihood ratio calibration in high vocal effort speech for a modern automatic speaker recognition system". By the way, Santander is a very nice and clean city with its wonderful sea and beach views.

Odyssey 2012 conference - The speaker and language recognition workshop

Singapore view from the top of Singapore Flyers, the giant Ferris wheel.

This is my first time attending Odyssey conference, the IEEE conference that is designated especially for speaker and language recognition papers. I attended this conference to learn more about the latest technology in speaker recognition field. I do not have any paper with me as the first author, but I am the  second author in the paper with tittle "Source Normalization for Language-Independent Speaker Recognition using i-Vectors". This is a paper where I collaborated with my previous daily supervisor. I was doing the calibration experiments for the paper.

BBfor2 Summer School in Forensic Evidence Evaluation and Validation

Tapas tour with the whole colleagues from BBfor2 network. The fried shark was awesomely fishy.

On 18-22 June 2012 I participated on the BBfor2 summer school. The summer school was about the evaluation and validation of forensic evidence reporting, especially for biometrics evidence. There are a lot of interesting sessions including poster session from the summer school student and practical session about calibration. On the last day we (I and all other BBfor2 fellows) had our semester project meeting.

Biometrics summer school 2012, Alghero

One of too many amazing photo spots in Alghero. Sunny day with beach and blue sky,  it couldn't be better than this.

On 11-15 June 2012, I participated as a student in the Biometrics summer school in Alghero, Italy. There were various interesting classes held in the summer school. The lectures vary from the definition of biometrics technology in general until the ethical code in dealing with biometrics system. There were also interesting class besides speaker, face and/or fingerprints recognitions such as iris, gait and ear recognitions.

Internship at Idiap Research Institute

Finally I officially ended my 5 weeks secondment at Idiap Research Institute on 06 June 2012.  My secondment research topic is about calibration for scores from automatic face recognition systems. Hopefully there will be a nice publication for my work here.

Poster Presentation at ICASSP 2012

Posing in front of my poster at ICASSP 2012 conference.

It is such a great thing to attend such a conference like ICASSP which has papers from a very broad field. Since ICASSP stands for international conference on acoustics, speech and signal processing, there are papers that vary from speech technologies, language technologies. biomedical signal processiong, until signal processing for forensic application. In this conference, I am also able to present my paper in the poster session with tittle "The effect of noise on modern automatic speaker recognition system".
